President’s Day 2014

Washington’s Birthday aka Presidents’ Day
Today, February 17, 2014, is Presidents’ Day. It was originally established in 1885, and was held on February 22, to honor and recognize George Washington’s birthday. Abraham Lincoln also had a February birthday. Although it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday, it is widely known as “Presidents’ Day,” and is generally viewed as a day to celebrate all United States presidents. In addition, the celebration date was changed to the third Monday in February in 1971 as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

Kansas Lawmaker Wants Deadlines On Courts Issuing Decisions

Kansas Senate Vice President Jeff King has offered Senate Bill 289 that, if passed and enacted, would impose time deadlines for most Kansas courts to have to issue decisions in cases. The impetus for the bill appears to be that Kansas legislators have been waiting for the Kansas Supreme Court to issue a ruling on a school finance lawsuit that was heard on appeal by the justices in October. This bill seemingly has problems with both enforcement and the separation of powers between the legislative and judicial branches of government. […]

FDA Asks Doctors and Pharmacists To Limit Acetaminophen

In January of 2011 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had asked drug manufacturers to limit the amount of acetaminophen to no more than 325 mg in each tablet or capsule by January 14, 2014. While more than 50% of manufacturers complied with this request, there were many who did not. Because of this, on January 14, 2014, the FDA asked health care professionals to stop prescribing dosages of medication that exceed 325 milligrams (mg) of acetaminophen and to help prevent, in most situations, a patient from receiving more. Cell Phone Surveillance Costs Can Change Privacy Protections

The United States Supreme Court has held that a person does have a reasonable expectation of privacy in their public movements. However, no specific rule has been announced as to when law enforcement surveillance violates this right. A Yale study found that the costs of surveillance can be as little as $.04 an hour. Decreasing costs of surveillance should trigger increased police surveillance under the Fourth Amendment otherwise there is too large of balance in favor of law enforcement over individual privacy rights.

Can A Font Decrease Driver Distraction?

Automobile and truck manufacturers are increasingly using a single LCD screen to control many in-vehicle accessories like music, GPS and climate control. The text styling on these LCD displays, as well as the buttons surrounding them, are a part of the manufacturer’s branding, just like everything else inside and outside the vehicle. This post’s title, “Can a Font Decrease Driver Distraction?” seems to have been answered as researchers have found that different fonts (typefaces) can have an impact on driver attention. More specifically, certain fonts, such as Humanist, can actually reduce driver distraction more than other fonts.

Honoring All Who Served – Veterans Day 2013

November 11, 2013, is Veterans Day. Although both Memorial Day and Veterans Day honor veterans, Memorial Day is a day in which we honor those veterans who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. Veterans Day is a day to honor all veterans, living or deceased, who served this County. Veterans Day is for veterans of all five branches of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. We celebrate Veterans Day with flags, memorials, parades, and acts of kindness for members of the military. We should honor and thank all veterans, as well as their families, for their passionate and dedicated service to our County by protecting us and the freedoms we cherish. […]
