  • 1986: Former United States District Judge Harry E. Claiborne of Nevada became the fifth federal official to be removed from office through impeachment. He was convicted by the Senate for tax evasion and bringing disrepute to the federal judiciary.
  • 1989: The official Soviet news agency Tass reported an unidentified flying object in Voronezh, Russia. The report The report mentions a 9 to 10 foot tall, three-eyed alien with a robot escort.
  • 1990: David Souter was sworn in as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • 2012: Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison following his conviction on 45 counts of sexual abuse.
