A Romanian lawyer filed a lawsuit against his local Orthodox Bishop and clergy alleging religious malpractice for failing to properly exorcise demons that had been plaguing him. The lawyer hired the clergymen to “exercise the demons which were responsible for the bad smells that were ruining his business” as well as haunting him in other ways. This is apparently the first Romanian lawsuit alleging “religious malpractice.”
Madalin Ciculescu, a Romanian businessman and lawyer, claims that flatulent demons were causing bad smells at his home and business. They were also “appearing” to him in the form of animals and making his life miserable:
When I am at home they switch the TV on and off all the time, they make foul smells that give me headaches and basically roam unhindered around my house and my business.
He hired 4 priests to perform an exorcism to get rid of the demons. The priests allegedly performed an exorcism.
Mr. Ciculescu claims that he continued to be plagued by the demons after the exorcism. He sued the priests essentially alleging religious malpractice and fraud. In an argument to the court with regard to his fraud allegation, he argued, “If they (the accused) represent the way of God then God’s ways are crooked.” The lawyer for the defendants rejected any wrongdoing or fraud on behalf of the priests or Bishop. In addition, he said that the exorcism had been properly performed and allegations of additional demons and more bad smells were just being imagined by the man.
The initial court to hear the case in Romania rejected the case as did the Romanian High Court. The lawyer apparently intends on taking the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
We will follow this case to see whether the European Court accepts it or whether the “demons” decide to go elsewhere.
