Lincoln Dog Bite Lawyers
Dogs are often called “a man’s (or woman’s) best friend”. Unfortunately, each year thousands of innocent people are attacked, bitten, seriously injured and even killed by dogs. Dog-related injuries can come from the smallest Chihuahua, the tallest Great Dane or the heaviest Mastiff.
In Nebraska, there are both state statutes and municipal ordinances governing dogs, including liability if someone is injured. Owners are required to license their dogs and maintain rabies vaccinations. Owners are also required to prevent their dogs from running free, to clean up their dog’s waste, to prevent excessive barking and much more.
Dog owners are liable even if their dog does not bite someone. The law makes them responsible if someone is injured when the dog is otherwise injuring, wounding or even chasing a person. For example, if you are injured while running away from a dog that is coming toward you, the dog’s owner is liable for your injuries. There are a few exceptions to a dog owner’s liability. Nebraska is not a “free bite” or “one bite” state in which a dog is entitled to bite someone once before the owner is responsible.
